Valentine’s Day Dessert Idea

I like to cook a special dessert every year for Valentine’s Day.  We did chocolate wafers and strawberry whip a few years ago!  This year I wanted something simple and yummy plus I wanted to use this super cute heart dish!

So, I did my favorite apple crumble.  I thought about using a red berry but just had a craving for apples so I used those instead!

Yummy Apple Crumble

What you need:

A small baking dish

3-4 apples

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/2 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/2 rolled oats

1 stick butter

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp cardamom

Juice of half a lemon

Small container of vanilla ice cream

What to do:

Pre-heat oven to 350.  Core, peel and chop apples.  Cut butter into small cubes.  Use one to grease baking pan.

Apples: Combine butter half of butter, granulated sugar, 1/4 each of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom along with lemon juice in a small bowl.  Place one single layer of apples in baking dish, spread mixture on top, apply another layer of apples and mix until the dish is 3/4 full. Wipe bowl clean.

Crumb layer:  Combine remaining butter, oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, and remaining spices to bowl and mix with hands.  This should be clumpy not fully mixed.  Sprinkle across apples pressing some down between layers.

Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until crispy on top and apples are the desired consistency.

I served it with heart-shaped ice cream that I made by pressing a small pint of vanilla ice cream into a cookie sheet and cutting out with a cookie cutter.  The crumble was warm when I served it so the ice cream melted out of shape but it was a cute idea!
