Why You Need SPF All Year Long

One of the things that surprised me over my career as an esthetician is how many people DON’T wear SPF consistently. There are several reasons why you need SPF all year long. From weather to refection the UV rays change throughout the year and not in ways most people think. I’ve always worn SPF during the day (even indoors) to help protect my skin.

Sun damage is one of the main factors of aging skin. It is also one of the toughest things to reverse! When ultraviolet (UV) light hits unprotected skin it causes DNA changes at a cellular level. Sunlight in the form of UVA radiation causes oxygen in melanocytes to damage DNA. This oxidation affects the DNA in melanocytes making it super hard to repair or reverse.

One of the easiest ways to avoid sun damage is by using SPF! Vitamin C helps a ton too by helping repair and avoid free radical damage. More about that here. We all know to use SPF in the spring and summer but fall and winter are just as important. UVA rays remain constant throughout the year and can penetrate through clouds and fog.

Snow reflects up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV light, so the rays hit you twice, further increasing your risk of skin cancer and premature aging.  In the fall, at least here in Monterey, it gets foggy. The fog also reflects UV light. Way back when I first started skin peels I had a client get a horrible sunburn when she didn’t take my advice and went for a walk in the fog!

I have a drawer full of different SPFs and a few different favorites. One of them is this Coola FULL SPECTRUM 360° MINERAL SUN SILK CRÈME ORGANIC FACE SUNSCREEN SPF 30. The organic formula is a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. While the proprietary plant-derived Full Spectrum 360° Complex helps mitigate the effects of HEV light (including blue light), IR, and pollution.  I love how seamless it goes on and looks great with or without makeup. The formula is reef-friendly, 70% organic, and vegan.

Check out the Coola Face Sunscreen here and let me know what you think!

About Me

I started Haute Beauty Guide in 2008 as a way to stay in touch with my skincare clients between appointments. At first, I only covered skincare but HBG grew with me as my life evolved— from traveling around the world, heading back to college after taking a long break, buying our first home, to getting my first gray hair! Monterey is my home and I take the lifestyle here to heart.

Vitamin c and SPF go together like cookies and mil Vitamin c and SPF go together like cookies and milk—they just make each other better. Vitamin C helps neutralize free radicals and protect the skin. When vitamin C and spf are used together skin has boosted protection from UV rays. Vitamin C is a skin booster, brightened and helps even skin tone. SPF protects from further damage allowing Vitamin to work on older damage.

The texture of this new @supergoop Daily Dose is gorgeous. It absorbs quickly and leaves behind a soft glow. Trust me this is going to be your go to product as we all start heading outdoors again.

If you are concerned about hyperpigmentation, sun damage or uneven skin tone then this one is a winner.
